After the referendum in 2010, Bonaire chose to have a close relationship with Holland, along with the other islands SABA and EUSTATIA (BES Islands). The Dutch government has the main office based on Bonaire. Since 2010, Holland has been consistently investing into the infrastructure, including a new hospital, new roads, a fire department, a police station, and a new sewage system which has all helped to boost the local economy.

To further spark the economy, Bonaire offers a very low rate of tax with no profit tax for companies, rental income tax free for non residents and in addition Dutch residents will not pay wealth tax for 10 years for the amount of money invested in real estate on Bonaire. Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) is a non-governmental research and conservation organization that has been protecting sea turtles since 1991. The small Caribbean island of Bonaire is home to three of the world’s six endangered or critically endangered species of marine turtles: the hawksbill, green, and loggerhead turtle. Green and hawksbill turtles can be seen year-round, while loggerheads generally visit only during the nesting season.

Bonaire offers outstanding natural sightseeing opportunities. The Washington Slagbaai National Park is an ecological reserve on the northwestern part of Bonaire.

Lac, part of the Bonaire National Marine Park, is the biggest lagoon of the ABC Islands, 700 hectares. Since 1980 Lac has been a RAMSAR site, recognized globally as a wetlands of special significance. The ecosystem of Lac is very fragile. To ensure a proper balance zones have been instituted. Lac is home to three globally endangered species: The Green Turtle, the Queen Conch and the mangrove trees.
